The start of 2010 brought a lot of changes and updates to search engine optimization practices. SEO is constantly evolving, making it necessary for companies to stay up to date on current trends.
Here are the top three SEO learnings from the start of 2010:
1) Incorporate social media into your overall marketing strategy to increase visibility. In an effort to make search a more interactive experience, search engines are focusing on incorporating social media into their results. Companies who are on board with social media have reaped the benefits through increased visibility. Users can now see social media results related to their search request and select websites they want to see more of, essentially customizing their search results. If you are not a part of social media yet, consider getting involved.
2) Pay attention to Bing. Bing has seen continual growth in 2010 and hit its all time high market share of 12.5% in February. It is claiming more space within the search market and is not to be ignored. Make sure you are optimizing for Bing and staying on top of its progress.
3) Continual optimization is a must. The companies who are continually optimizing their sites to be up to date with SEO standards are setting themselves up for success. One of the most important things you can do to optimize your site is check for duplicate content. Search engines want to present a variety of information to the user and having pages of duplicate content on your site indicates to them that you do not have valuable information to share. In turn, they may not display your listing in search results. Focus on creating fresh and original content on your site and your search engine rankings will improve.
It remains to be seen what the rest of 2010 will bring, but keeping up to date on current SEO trends can help set you up for long-term success.
